OMG: A Court of Mist and Fury was AMAZING!

Ladies and gentlemen, I have JUST finished A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas and I literally am bouncing in my seat, because it was so (pardon the language, but this book warrants it) fucking good! I get the hype! I get it! I get why everyone was freaking out about it, and I have finally joined the legions of rabid fandomry.

Feyre survived Amarantha's clutches to return to the Spring Court—but at a steep cost. Though she now has the powers of the High Fae, her heart remains human, and it can't forget the terrible deeds she performed to save Tamlin's people.
Nor has Feyre forgotten her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court. As Feyre navigates its dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms—and she might be key to stopping it. But only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future—and the future of a world cleaved in two.
With more than a million copies sold of her beloved Throne of Glass series, Sarah J. Maas's masterful storytelling brings this second book in her seductive and action-packed series to new heights.

The is no way I’m going to be able to formulate a coherent review. Mostly because I’m writing this in the aftermath of finishing the book and can’t even form coherent thoughts.

I enjoyed the story the majority of my time reading it, and the more it progressed, the more I began to love it. But then the ending happened and OMG it soared beyond 5 stars and landed right in a puddle of manic obsession. I thought I knew where the ending was going and I was heart broken about it (because emotions)… but NOPE! The conniving Sarah J Maas had another thing coming for us and made the ending so bad-ass I had to read it twice.

Everyone said that A Court of Mist and Fury was a lot better than A Court of Thorns and Roses, and I thought “Okay, but I really liked A Court of Thorns and Roses so it can’t be that much better.” You all: I WAS SO GLORIOUSLY WRONG.

Spoilery thoughts for discussion if you’ve already read the book:

  1. I don’t hate Tamlin after reading this book. I’m sorry I just don’t. I think he’s a moron and needs to be slapped, but I think that’s where it ends for him. I don’t think he’s trying to be as awful as he is actually being…
  2. I wasn’t sure how I felt about Lucien dropping on his knees in front of Elain and claiming her as his mate right away. It seemed kind of cheesy? Especially when Rhysand and Feyre were so dead-set on keeping things about them secret because of how it can be used against you. It seemed out of character I guess? I do see why it was an important plot point though.
  3. The editing was bad at times. I lost count of how many times muscles/limbs/etc “barked” or how many “knuckle-lengths” of alcohol were poured, or how many throats “bobbed” and dresses “hissed.” I found the repetitive use of unique descriptors distracting – did anyone else?

  1. I loved this book! I have no idea how Sarah is going to wrap it up, but I’m expecting the epic proportions to shoot through the roof and up into the stars. I was so excited to read more about Rhysand…I was sort of waiting for the moment when Feyre would leave Tamlin. He just wasn’t right for her after they got out from Under the Mountain. Her whole growth (in confidence, using her powers, and with Rhysand) was perfect…and steaaaaaammmy! Also, Cassian and Nesta! 😆 I seriously can’t wait to see where that goes. If the extra part about them was any indicator of what’s about to happen between them, I just might melt into a puddle of feelings. What are you looking forward to most in ACOWAR?

    1. What “extra part about them”?!?! Did I miss something? So is this a trilogy? On Goodreads it has a million books in the series (and by a million I mean maybe 6 or 7?). I think I’m most looking forward to seeing what happens with Tamlin, since I’m not convinced he’s a bad guy – I feel like he’s going to redeem himself just a little bit. Or maybe I’m just hoping he does? XD

  2. Hmm … I think I am going to dive right into the spoilery discussion points you offered 🙂
I don’t HATE Tamlin either. I am very angry with him, but I know that he didn’t hurt her so much on purpose. But you know how the saying goes “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”. I am very interested where his character will go from here. He is not nonredeemable, but he needs to seriously back off.
Also, I was very angry with Lucien. He was a freaking coward in that book and I say that lovingly, because he was one of my faves in the first one, but he should have helped Feyre. As for the whole mate thing … I really can’t remember that all that much. I think I sort of knew that it was going to happen, but I wasn’t really happy about it. I thought that was just too “convenient” of a coincidence that his mate would be Feyre’s sister.
My brain is getting hazy on the details of that book by now, so i can’t really say anything about the choice of words either. I am super excited for ACOWAR though!

    1. 1) I’m glad you don’t hate Tamlin either. I felt like I was the only one! I am not yet he won’t be slightly redeemed (though I agree with what you said, he’s not truly redeemable) in the next one.
      2) I am angry with Lucien either. He was a coward – and yes, he was one of my favorites in the first one. A lot of his character in this one seemed a little convenient for the storyline. Luckily I loved the story so much I didn’t care… but if I’m nitpicking…
      3) I’m super excited for ACOWAR, too!!! It’s going to be amazing!

  3. I’m glad you enjoyed this one! I kind of have decided SJM books aren’t for me, but it’s always great when you find a book to fall in love with. 🎉 Pity about the bad editing though. 😝

  4. ISN”T IT JUST AMAZING!!!! We got so much of precious Rhys, and the inner circle was amazing, and Feyre has grown so much, I LOVE SO MANY THINGS I CAN”T I can’t wait to reread it in preparation for ACOWAR (which I am terrified and excited for. Like I cannot wait to see what Nesta’s like now. She’s going to be badass. Plus all the other characters andfhsladkfhsajkfhskdaf).

I agree with your thoughts on Tamlin. So many people despise him, but I just feel sorry for him. The events Under the Mountain changed him for sure, and now he’s just trying to do what he thinks is best, even though it isn’t that great. I hope he can get better.

    1. Yay that we agree about Tamlin (and all of the other flail-worthy things!)! I am crossing my fingers he will redeem himself in ACOWAR and find some peace. He’s an idiot, but he’s not a bad guy to the core. It comes out SO SOON!!! GAHH!

    1. it’s definitely a fun binge read so long as you don’t take everything too seriously (kind of like Twilight)! I hope you enjoy it!!

  5. Glad to see you really loved this one! I swear it makes me so happy when I see someone read ACOMAF and the proceeded to flip out because IT’S SO GOOD. Lucky you for not having to wait too long for ACOWAR though because the wait has been torture 😂. And while I wouldn’t say that I hate Tamlin I also wouldn’t say that I like him. I loved him in ACOTAR but I think he made some terrible decisions on ACOMAF. I don’t think he’s all bad though and I’m looking forward to seeing if SJM redeems him. I think his storyline is going to go somewhere interesting for sure. I completely agree about Lucien and the whole mate thing though! I didn’t see the point in that. Lucien was my favorite in the first book but in the second I had very mixed feelings about him. Great review!! 😊
