In case you missed it, I recently reviewed The Bronze Horseman  by Paullina Simons and called it one of my favorite reads of all-time. Tatiana and Alexander is the continuation of their story, and it doesn’t disappoint.

“This has everything a romance glutton could wish for: a bold, talented, and dashing hero, a heart-stopping love affair!”
—Daily Mail (London)

Paullina Simons’s internationally bestselling blockbuster The Bronze Horseman told the heart-soaring tale of a young Russian woman’s transcendent love affair with a Red Army soldier during the siege of Leningrad in the dark days of World War Two. The epic story continues in Tatiana and Alexander—a novel of the enduring power of love and commitment against the devastating forces of war and the equally dangerous forces of keeping the peace. A sweeping, intensely compelling romantic historical saga, Tatiana and Alexander is a Russian Thorn Birds and a truly unforgettable reading experience.

This story picks up more or less where The Bronze Horseman left off; however, the timelines overlap a little bit. In this book you learn more about Alexander’s back story prior to WWII, and you glimpse at unseen moments from when Alexander and Tatiana were together in Leningrad and Lazarevo. Of course, the meat of the novel is the agonizing separation of Alexander and Tatiana who are across the world from each other.

This book is heavy, heavy, heavy with sadness and longing. It’s a challenging one to push through. Your heart breaks over and over again for Tatiana and Alexander as they live their separate lives: Alexander desirous of survival to find Tatiana, and a hollow Tatiana mourning the loss of her Alexander. It is because they are apart that I would say it is a slower read. The plot isn’t quite as action-packed as The Bronze Horseman, as much more of the story is emotional, filled with the deepest and darkest thoughts of our two main characters.

But don’t worry, your patience pays off. The ending of the book is fantastic and moves quickly. There will be times that you question Tatiana as a mother, Alexander as a solider, and oftentimes both of their sanity, but it is so worth it if you are invested in the love story of Tatiana and Alexander.

An excellent sequel to The Bronze Horseman. It’s not as amazing, but man, it’s still pretty dang good.
