Today’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt is “favorite book quotes.” and it made me wonder how many of you actually save book quotes?
Initially when I chose to answer this prompt, I was going to do exactly what was expected: list 10 book quotes that I loved. But then I started to think about it, and I realized I would have to actually hunt for quotes from some of my favorite books.
Guys, I almost never mark quotes in books! RARELY do I read a passage in a book that I find so moving that I have to save it. It’s definitely not without trying. Every time I start a new book, I tell myself I’m going to mark good quotes. But then I get carried away and days later I find myself finished with the book and nothing marked. Mind you, this is especially difficult since half of the books I “read” are audiobooks!
There are definitely a few books that I loved that are endlessly quotable (see covers below). But again, I never really felt compelled to mark that many of my own (although I do have one page marked in The Bronze Horseman that has a quote I love). And the quotes that I can think of from the books are ones that other people have , highlighted first!
So after all this prattling, I am asking you: Do you save book quotes? Am I the only person in the world who doesn’t mark/save/dog-ear/check/whatever book quotes? Or do you ignore them, too, only to look them up on Goodreads at a later date?
To conclude, I will add that I do have a favorite quote. Of course, it’s from the Harry Potter series (and if you haven’t noticed, I actually have a HP quote at the very bottom of this blog if you scroll allllllllll the way down)… And without further delay, my favorite quote of ALL-TIME IS… *drum-roll*
“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”
Do you save book quotes? And if so, what is your favorite quote? If you don’t save book quotes, tell me! That way I won’t feel like the worst book blogger ever!
A.S. Thornton has evolved from book blogger to author with a particular fondness for writing forbidden love in ancient deserts. When not writing, she’s caring for dogs and cats as a veterinarian. You’ll never find animals at the center of her writing, though, because those fictional worlds don’t have veterinarians and her literal brain can’t accept that the poor critters would be without parasite prevention. Thornton’s debut, DAUGHTER OF THE SALT KING is available wherever books are sold.

Oh yeah I’m the same. I don’t mark or write them. I tried doing it in a seperate booklet for a while but that was too much effort haha. I am glad the internet exists and I can just google or use goodreads. Haha.

Hahaha right?! Me too! It’s too hard XD

Part of my problem is having a good amount of hardbacks and feeling uncomfortable marking in nice editions. As for a super quotable book, The Picture of Dorian Gray has something worth marking on every other page, hehe.
Ali
Yes – that’s a whole other issue! I definitely don’t like marking in my books (even my less collectible ones), so then I would have to carry around little sticky tabs and… well, I’m way too lazy for that.

I will highlight things on my ereader but I never refer back to them unless I need them for a review.

I will sometimes do that, too, and then I never refer back to them XD

I’m really bad at saving book quotes, especially because I read a lot more e-books now when I’m reviewing books (and I don’t want to save quotes from ARCs in case it’s changed later). But I am hoping to get a bit better at this because I LOVE quotes and I want to save some of them in my bullet journal. We’ll see how it goes. haha Harry Potter definitely has some amazing quotes, and your favorite is seriously one of my favorites too! I love it!! I also have a lot of favorite quotes from Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Oooooh yes I forgot about Perks!! That one was a great book!

Okay so I do and don’t. I never really did and even now, if someone asked my favorite quote I wouldn’t have one. But I DO save quotes now because of the store >.< All my designs basically revolve around book quotes so I mark them sometimes. Not all the time, though, because google is a pretty good place to go for quotes hahah
Ali
Yes, I bet you have to save a lot, and definitely scour the internet for even more!
Melissa's Midnight Musings
I try to save book quotes sometimes, but they really have to grab me, and make me stop and go “ooh I like that.” But that’s pretty rare these days

Yes, I agree it’s very rare for me, too! I’m usually not tuned in enough to the writing – I’m just so engrossed in the story!

I DO save book quotes- I love this post!!
Ali
Haha, thank you! Brave for being able to save quotes!
Bec (@booktineus)
I had a quote book once, but I was so wrapped up in the book I kept forgetting to write quotes in it! Now the only time I really save books is when I’m reading an ebook because it’s so easy to just highlight on the screen as you go!

Yes, it really is easy! I’ll do that occasionally when I’m reading ebooks, but then I always forget to refer back to them 😀
Nikki
I never save book quotes, which is sad because I love a good quote! I am a sucker for motivational quotes!
Ali
Ugh, me, too! And I’d feel really cool if I could be the one who found the quote in the first place XD
Michelle @ Pink Polka Dot Books
Oh man, it would be really hard to save quotes if you do audio a lot!! So you defintiely have an excuse. I used to mark quotes quite a bit, but I kind of stopped over the last 2 years. Most of the quotes I used for this week’s TTT were from books I read in the first 4 years of blogging and not the last 2. Also, Goodreads is a big help– because I KNEW there was a quote form Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and I couldn’t remember what it was!

Hahaha, yes thanks GOODNESS for Goodreads saving all those quotes for us!!

A bit late to the party – Hey there, based on the comments I think I’m in the minority here haha. I love saving quotes! Before, I tried saving all my quotes on a notebook but oh man does it take a lot of effort. So, recently I started this new system of saving it. First I’ll bookmark them. Then once I’m done with the book I’ll either type it on my phone’s notes app or try saving it on goodreads. I’ll admit it still does take a little bit of effort but now since I started my bookstagram (notoriouslybookish) I find it comes in handy for captions!
Ali
Psh, there’s no such thing as late to the party with comments! Your input is always welcome (: That is quite a process you have, but I totally agree- book quotes are excellent sources of material for IG captions! Thanks for stopping by and commenting 😀

I do save quotes! Used to mark them with index stickers but now usually do it in Goodreads updates, and then the ones that absolutely moved me in some way I write down in my calendar. And then there’s some lines from my favourite series which I just remember by heart and go back to when I need to. 🙂 I have many favourites but there is one that I say to myself the most often, kind of like a mantra whenever I feel overwhelmed with things and need a reminder of my inner strength, from one of my favourite and most inspirational heroines: “That which harmed me can harm me now only if I allow it to, and I will not”. 🙂
Ali
I love that you save quotes so diligently. And I particularly like that one quote! What’s it from? My google searching didn’t reveal it to me!
Aneta
The quote’s from “In the Ruins” by Kate Elliott, 6th book of her Crown of Stars series. It’s one of those series I can’t even think about for too long without bursting into tears, I’m sure you know what I mean and have these too. 😀
Ali
Ohhh I totally do! I am going to have to look into that series then- I LOVE ones that stick with you forever!
