Every so often I decide that I need to force my favorite novels upon my blog followers (the last time I did this with the The Bone Season). Today I’ve decided Ready Player One should take a turn. If you haven’t read this book, you don’t even understand what fun you’re missing out on, so read on to see my five reasons why you need to embrace your inner nerd and read this novel already.

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the  OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines, puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. When Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

So let’s get down to it and discuss why you should read Ready Player One:

  1. If you’re not yet a nerd, you can discover your inner nerd when reading this novel. If you’re already a nerd, take solace in knowing that there’s someone out there nerdier than you are (that someone would be the author, Ernest Cline).
  2. Learn more about 80’s pop culture than you ever wanted to know, and use it to impress all of your friends.
  3. Feel like a reading Speedy Gonzales when you start this novel and finish it in just days because it’s so freaking awesome you can’t put it down. Need a book to get you out of that reading slump? This will do it. Falling behind on your Goodreads reading challenge? This will help you get back on track. This main character’s intense quest to find the three clues hidden in a virtual world make it an edge-of-your-seat read. Once you start hunting for those clues, you won’t be able to stop.
  4. Get a little meta and contemplate the fact that you’re reading about characters in a fictional world living their lives in a virtual world.
  5. It’s being made into a movie directed by Steven Spielberg!! I have no idea what a movie that mostly takes place in virtual reality is going to be like, but it’s one book adaptation that I’m actually excited about for a change.
