I have heard people mention the dreaded book slump in the blogosphere, twitterverse, and bookstagramopolis (….it just occurred to me that bookstagram [aka bookish instagram] doesn’t have a location name like the others do, so I’ve just remedied that. You’re welcome), but hated ever experienced it. Well, I’m experiencing it now. AND IT IS HORRIBLE. No book is good enough, no bookish thing is fun enough. It’s all horrible and I’m dying.
You may not have noticed my book slump.
My posts are usually scheduled 2-3 weeks in advance (book reviews usually 4-6 weeks), so although I’ve been experiencing the WORST BOOK SLUMP EVER and am literally not bookstagramming, tweeting, or blogging AT ALL (let alone reading much of anything), it still seems like I’m pretty active. Let me just make things clear: I’m barely scraping by in my bookish life.
I have actually missed a few days of instagram posts (GASP YOU GUYS I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE – NOT EVEN WHEN TRAVELING ABROAD) and what scares me more: I don’t care.
And now my scheduled posts are running out. And reading a half of a book for the month of July really isn’t going to cut it. So I’ve got to figure something out to remedy this situation.
How do I fix this book slump?!
Whelp, I think it all started because I recently began querying agents for the novel I’ve written (I’ll talk about this more at a later post). This is an extremely time-consuming process. LIKE. EXTREME. I can’t even believe how long it takes me to query one agent.
So I’ve told myself I can only query on the week days and not on the weekends, so that I have more time for myself on those days.
And I was listening to Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas (the second in the Throne of Glass series), and you know what? I DNF’D IT. No shame in my game here. I was bored halfway through. I knew it was a bad slump when View Spoiler ».
So it’s time for me to bring out the big guns to fix this slump:
I’m going to re-read Twilight.
Wish me luck. It’s been over 10 years since I read it last, but I was OBSESSED then, so I hope it has the same charm then as it does now. *fingers crossed*
Have you been in a book slump? How did you fix it?
A.S. Thornton has evolved from book blogger to author with a particular fondness for writing forbidden love in ancient deserts. When not writing, she’s caring for dogs and cats as a veterinarian. You’ll never find animals at the center of her writing, though, because those fictional worlds don’t have veterinarians and her literal brain can’t accept that the poor critters would be without parasite prevention. Thornton’s debut, DAUGHTER OF THE SALT KING is available wherever books are sold.

Have you tried switching to non fiction? I did…totally helped! But now I just want to read non fiction.
Ali
I haven’t! Nonfiction scares me a bit – because I don’t even know where I’d begin, but it’s not a bad idea. I loved Jon Kraukauer’s – but I think that’s some of the only nonfiction I’ve read!
Amy
Good luck getting out of your slump! I’ve been in a slump before. What helped me get out of it was participating in a challenge Popsugar’s where you are supposed to read a book from a bunch of different categories. It forced me out of my comfort zone and got me researching books I ordinarily would have skipped over.
Ali
that’s a great idea – i might have to consider doing something like that! I’m going to go look into it now!

It’s scary that I had the exact same thought the other day – to reread Twilight to get out of a book slump!! I think I read too many books in June too quickly and so my mind wants a break but I feel guilty for not finishing anything over the past two weeks. I’ve got a huge TBR pile, but nothing is making the cut. Le sighhhhhh
Ali
Yeah, same here about the TBR. Everything I pick up I just put back down again. UGH! Twilight so far is interesting. Mostly it’s just fun to read it sooo much later with a different perspective!

I feel your pain. I recently went through a reading/bookstagram slump as well. I actually went off bookstagram for two weeks and survived 😂. I eventually got out of it by doing a reread of some light, fluffy books and then I got my reading mojo back. I hope you find yours as well!
Ali
That sounds like a really good idea – I need to find some light fluffy books!!

Oy vei girl when you say you’re going to extremes, you GO TO EXTREMES.
I hope you still love it, and it doesn’t destroy you. <3 And I hop you have fun at Disney – maybe a little innocent fun will bring you back to life!

Hahahah, thank you! I’m not quite sure how I feel about Twilight so far… but maybe it’ll re-grow on me?

I hate book slumps. I feel like there’s a cycle and I hit it every couple months.

They’re the worst! I’ve never had one as bad as my most recent one – but I’m slowly pulling myself out!
