Happy New Year! I hope 2019 is proving to be spectacular for everyone so far (…and if the five days of the new year have not been kind to you, I’m sorry). The past few years I have made resolution posts, where I discuss my bookish goals for the new year. This year is the same, expect this time, my resolutions are a little different.
Let me preface this post by saying that I’m incredibly type-A. Making plans and sticking to them is quite easy for me. It’s not having a plan that is difficult.
I mentioned my bookish/blogging slump that I had in the second half of 2018 that made me consider abandoning the bookish world completely. I’m not quitting; however, my resolutions are a direct reflection of that slump. Instead of walking away, I’m just taking a step back.
Bookish Resolutions for 2019:
- Read less (again). This was my resolution for last year, and I happily achieved it. This year I’m going to take it a step farther and set my Goodreads reading goal to ONE BOOK (*gasp*). That doesn’t mean I’m only going to read one book. Instead, it means that I can read as many or as few books as I want. (..I know you’re probably wondering why the hell I would even bother setting a Goodreads goal. LISTEN: BABY STEPS, OKAY?)
- Blog as often or as little as I want to. If I don’t have any post ideas for a few weeks, then I won’t post anything. If I have lots of ideas, then I’ll post ’em! Basically, my goal is to have no goal. Guys, that is going to be hard for me!
- Decrease screen time. This overlaps with my real life, too. I’m sick of being on my phone/computer so often, and a HUGE portion of that is blogging social media: instagram, twitter, facebook, etc. I’m going to be majorly decreasing the amount of time I’m on those platforms. I’m hoping to rarely visit twitter and facebook (<1x/week), and Instagram I’m allowed on only 3x/week for my bookish account.
- Have no writing goal. I will work on my novel(s) if I want to, but if I decide I don’t want to touch them for the entire year, then NO PROBLEM!
Do you have any bookish resolutions/goals for 2019?
A.S. Thornton has evolved from book blogger to author with a particular fondness for writing forbidden love in ancient deserts. When not writing, she’s caring for dogs and cats as a veterinarian. You’ll never find animals at the center of her writing, though, because those fictional worlds don’t have veterinarians and her literal brain can’t accept that the poor critters would be without parasite prevention. Thornton’s debut, DAUGHTER OF THE SALT KING is available wherever books are sold.

Good luck! I also set my Goodreads goal low. I’m probably going to read less this year because I want to spend more time on other things.

Yes, I want to spend time on other things, too. So far I’ve just played a lot more board games XD

Reading slumps are the WORST. Several years ago I went through a year long reading slump. It was harsh to say the least. My reading goal since then has been 24 a year (two books per month). I find 24 books challenges me without stressing me out. Good luck on your goals!

Thank you! Yes, I am enjoying being “free” of a reading goal this year so far! It’s quite fun!

I really want to decrease my screen time this year too!

Good luck! I’ve been doing it so far, and I love it! I find I’m not even missing all the social media.

I absolutely love this list! For 2018, I also set myself to no goals. My reading goal for the year was 1 book, and it was freeing to know I could read whenever I wanted to, whatever I wanted to. I do feel like the reason behind it wasn’t the smartest, though. I only set myself with no goals because I just thought: “if I put no expectations, I’ll never be disappointed.” It is efficient, but I also I didn’t put effort on anything. This year, I decided to set myself a few semi-achievable goals: they aren’t unrealistic to the point I’ll be disappointed by not achieving them, but I also want to know I’ll be putting daily effort on them. Decreasing screen time is definitely another resolution of mine too; social media can be an amazing community, but also a very toxic place, and hopefully by spending less time on my phone, I’ll feel its impact less. I wish you an amazing 2019! ✨

I agree, setting my goal to 1 book was so freeing!! I’m reading so slowly, and some days not even reading. It’s nice for me to take a step back. and LOL to your reason for the 1 book goal – hey, it works!
I’m on social media a lot less so far, and LOVING the results! I don’t miss it, and I find I don’t go on long social-media-binges, which were just awful!
