Do you ever read a book and just think man, if I could have their life… Well I do, so I have compiled a list of some of the characters whose lives I want to live. There is a slight blurring of the lines between this post, and my post about worlds I would want to vacation in, but I tried to distinguish between the two best I could!
1. Paige Mahoney from The Bone Season
Yeah, her life is a tad-bit stressful, but who wouldn’t want clairvoyant powers?! I want to be able to visit people’s dreamscapes!
2. Diana from The Discovery of Witches
Because who doesn’t want a hot AF vampire boyfriend in addition to being a super-BA witch? (…let’s be honest, as much as I want her powers, I really just want to be wedded to a perfect vampire hottie.)
3. Nix from The Girl from Everywhere
I WANT A MAGICAL SHIP THAT WILL TAKE ME TO ANY LOCATION (fictional or real)!!!!!! See my review of this book here.
4. Hermione from the Harry Potter Series
Duuhhhhhhhhhh. Does this one even need an explanation? Who doesn’t want to live in the Harry Potter world?!
5. Peter Pan from well, Peter Pan
While I actually didn’t like this book that much, I still really enjoyed the whimsical world. I would very much like to be a 12-year-old boy who is surrounded by magical things, never has to grow up, and can fly.
6. ANYONE who lives in the Dawn Court from A Court of Wings and Ruin
I read about the Dawn Court palace in ACOWAR and wanted nothing more than to transport myself there immediately. HANDS DOWN my favorite place in that entire series. See my review of ACOWAR here.
7. Kell in the Shades of Magic Trilogy
I. WANT. TO. BE. AN. ANTARI. PERIOD. See my review of the first in the series, A Darker Shade of Magic, here!
8. Someone who works in Caraval
I want to be one of the many people who acts in Caraval. I feel like it’d be like working at (albeit a slightly more creepy) Disneyland, which is also something I greatly want to do. See my review here.
9. Myfawny Thomas in The Rook
She’s rich, she lives in London, and she’s powerful AF. Plus, she’s a smart-ass. I WANT TO BE HER. See my review here.
End note: You’ll notice that there are no sci-fi novels included in this post. That’s because space absolutely TERRIFIES me, and I have ZERO INTEREST in living a life (fictional or real) in space EVER.
Who’s fictional life would you want to live?
A.S. Thornton has evolved from book blogger to author with a particular fondness for writing forbidden love in ancient deserts. When not writing, she’s caring for dogs and cats as a veterinarian. You’ll never find animals at the center of her writing, though, because those fictional worlds don’t have veterinarians and her literal brain can’t accept that the poor critters would be without parasite prevention. Thornton’s debut, DAUGHTER OF THE SALT KING is available wherever books are sold.

I think I would prefer to be Delilah Bard over Kell, but agree on the antari point.
Ali
Wellllll she had a rough start, so maybe that’s why I chose Kell?! But yes, either way – Antari powers would be A-OK with me!
Jackie
I’m ALMOST with you on Hermione Granger. I’d be TOTALLY with you if I could live her life without the constant threat of death at the hand of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named!
Jackie just posted This is the Book I Didn’t Know I Needed to Read | Sign Language by Amy Ackley
Ali
Hahaha yes exactly!!

To be honest, I’d be on board to be literally anyone in the Harry Potter series (except for the bad guys, of course). I dream to study in Hogwarts and being one of the smartest in class, like Hermione, is definitely another wish of mine, hahah. I find hard to decide which characters I would like to be, because they can have very dangerous lives. I think I’d like to have Lara Jean’s life, from the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy, because she has a fantastic talent for cooking and baking – something I still have to conquer, hahaha. Great post, Ali!
Ali
I haven’t read To All The Boys…, but of course I’ve heard of it! I’d like to be a good chef/baker, so that doesn’t sound so bad at all!
Maggie
100% Hermione.
Also, Anne of Green Gables because sometimes I just want that simpler time (and the home cooking..)…. though I totally get it would actually be really hard times full of hard work… but… still.
Ali
hahahaha right?! I like to ignore the part about it being harder work…
Gemma
This is such an amazing topic to make a list of! And I concur with a few of the characters in your list (Hermione, foremost). I’m still trying not to spiral down to annoyance when it comes to ACOWAR; I don’t know if I’ll ever get to it! *covers face*
Ali
Hahahaha, some books just aren’t for everyone, and that’s okay! You can be annoyed by ACOWAR. There were definitely some things that rubbed me the wrong way with that book.
