I know that writing off an entire genre is an awful thing to do. There are so many books in a genre that can be amazing, even if others weren’t my thing. But I don’t care. I’m doing it, because I’m sick and tired of picking up books and promptly DNF-ing them.

Romance novels are not for me.

In the past few months I keep hearing about amazing books with an amazing love story (because we all know I am obsessed with love stories), so I pick it up with my expectations sky-high. When I finally sit down to read it, I barely get 20% in before I’ve had enough and have to DNF it. Most recently this happened with the following two:

After three long years of war, starkly handsome Wynter Atrialan will have his vengeance on Summerlea's king by taking one of the man's beautiful, beloved daughters as his bride. But though peace is finally at hand, Wynter's battle with the Ice Heart, the dread power he embraced to avenge his brother's death, rages on.

Khamsin Coruscate, Princess of Summerlea and summoner of Storms, has spent her life exiled to the shadows of her father's palace. Reviled by her father, marriage to Wintercraig's icy king was supposed to be a terrible punishment, but instead offers Kham her first taste of freedom—and her first taste of overwhelming passion.

As fierce, indomitable Wynter weathers even Khamsin's wildest storms, surprising her with a tenderness she never expected, Kham wants more than Wynter's passion—she yearns for his love. But the power of the Ice Heart is growing, dangerous forces are gathering, and a devastating betrayal puts Khamsin and Wynter to the ultimate test.

And here’s my (maybe not so great?) reason why.

Both of those romance novels were so shoulder-shruggingly meh. I have found that while I really, really enjoy love stories, I HATE romance novels, because there’s no authentic tension between the couple. I WANT TENSION! I don’t want easy romance, because then I won’t care about the relationship. I literally fell asleep during one of the “steamy” scenes (which is supposed to be the fun part, right?) in The Winter King because I didn’t care about the characters or their relationship. I don’t care about gratuitous sex scenes! I want a wonderful love story!

So anyway, I’ve decided to just write off the genre. I don’t care how much someone raves about a romance novel, I’m not reading it! If I even dare to pick up another one, someone just slap it out of my hand because I’M NOT GOING TO LIKE IT.

I’m not saying the romance genre is bad. I’m just saying it’s not for me.
