I hope all you mothers were adequately celebrated this past weekend! And if you’re not a mom and/or didn’t celebrate with your mom, hope you had a fantastic weekend! Today I’m choosing some of my favorite bookish moms. Chime in and name some of yours!
1. THE QUEEN OF MOMS: Molly Weasley from the Harry Potter Series
2. Mrs. Lancaster in The Fault in Our Stars
I loved loved loved Hazel’s mom in this book. She wasn’t perfect, but that made her all the more wonderful.
3. Ma in Room
Another flawed mother, but she did everything she could to get her son out of that situation, and she ultimately succeeded. A really heart-breaking but wonderful mother-son story.
4. Ysabeau de Clermont from The All Souls Trilogy
Ysabeau is one of those bad-ass moms that you want on your side when shit goes down. I LOVED her and her firecracker personality.
5. Ari’s Mom in Aristotle and Dante Discovery the Secrets of the Universe
Another very flawed, yet brave, mother. She loves and accepts her son for what he is, and you can’t ask for a better mom-move.
End note: After writing this post, I have come to realize how few good mothers there are in books. I had a VERY hard time coming up with five! Most moms in novels are either awful or absent. I guess I should’ve done a post about the worst bookish moms. Would’ve been much easier!
Who are some of your favorite (or least favorite) bookish mothers?
This prompt is from “Top Ten Tuesday,” a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
A.S. Thornton has evolved from book blogger to author with a particular fondness for writing forbidden love in ancient deserts. When not writing, she’s caring for dogs and cats as a veterinarian. You’ll never find animals at the center of her writing, though, because those fictional worlds don’t have veterinarians and her literal brain can’t accept that the poor critters would be without parasite prevention. Thornton’s debut, DAUGHTER OF THE SALT KING is available wherever books are sold.

Great post, a lovely way to celebrate mothers everywhere! This might just be me being stupid, but I never realised that mothers day was at different times of the year for different countries- I presumed everyone had it in March like in the UK! 🙂 🙂

OMG – not stupid!! I didn’t realize it was at different times of year either!! I guess I didn’t even know if other countries celebrated it?? How silly of us 😀

Haha, okay, glad it wasn’t just me that had some kind of mind block 🙂 🙂 In the UK we have it in March, on a Sunday still, and I’m guessing the US has it in May? I feel like maybe the majority of Western countries have it, but I’m not sure? 🙂
Ali
Yes, ours is in May! It was just this past weekend (:

I thought about doing my Mother’s day post like this but could otthi k of many good Moms. I think you are right that there is a lack of Mom’s in many books. So I wrote about my Mom’s favourite books. 😀
And Mrs. Weasley is the queen of mom’s to me too!
Ali
I saw a lot of people write about their mom’s favorite books, and I thought that was so clever! I would never have thought about that. I may have to do it next year!

Those are some fantastic moms! Other than Mrs. Weasley and Ma from Room, I think Maya Angelou’s mom from Mom&Me&Mom would be up there as well!
Ali
I didn’t read that one! I’m glad there’s another good mom out there in literature, since I had such a hard time finding them! 😀

Molly Weasley and Mrs. Lancaster are two of my favorite fictional mothers, so I’m glad to see them on your list! (Although I honestly doubt there’s a post about the best fictional mothers that Molly’s not on. xD) Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous post! <3
Ali
haha, thank you! My husband mentioned Mrs. Lancaster, but since I haven’t read those books, I told him it felt like cheating to put her on there. But good to know you agree with him 😀
Diana
Great post. I really liked Ma in Room. I don’t agree with all her decisions especially towards the end but I do understand why she made them. Definitely a great mom.
Ali
Yes, I agree. She was certainly flawed, but she did what she thought was best for the little boy and at the end of the day, you can’t fault that!

[…] I thought it would be a great time to recognize some of the amazing dads we encounter in books. I recently did this for Mother’s Day, and found that it was significantly more challenging to find good moms than it is to find good […]
