I love a book that makes me laugh out loud when I’m reading it. I mean, what’s better than laughing?! I’ve compiled a list of books I’ve read recently that actually made me LOL. In making this list I have realized I don’t read that many funny books, so please chime in and let me know some funny books you think I should read!
1. Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
This book is straight up HILARIOUS! Semple takes social situations that are happening all of the time around us and shows us how ridiculously funny they are. This book is 100% worth your time.
2. The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
Do you remember reading this book as a kid? Have you read it as an adult? I bet you’ll find it way more comical reading it now. You’ll also appreciate how clever it is.
3. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
OMG this book is so stinking funny! I read it for the first time not that long ago (see my review here) and was so pleasantly surprised by the humor in it. Anne is hilarious. You need to read this book if you haven’t yet.
4. My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows
I got this book in my very first OwlCrate, and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I would never have picked this one up on my own, but it turned out to be quite fun and had lots of LOL moments. See my review here.
5. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
This was one of my favorite books of 2016 (also of all-time). This book had A LOT of laughs (some of the characters are hilarious). I will say that it’s not all laughs – this book has a lot of everything, and it’s DEFINITELY worth your time. Check out my rave review here.
6. The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
This book is chock full of humor, and as such invites tons of LOLs. My husband read it recently and laughed so often while reading it, I almost picked it up again. If you haven’t read this one before, definitely consider it. If you’ve read it before, you might consider picking it up again! See my mini-review here.
What are some books you’ve read recently that made you LOL? What funny books would you recommend I read?
A.S. Thornton has evolved from book blogger to author with a particular fondness for writing forbidden love in ancient deserts. When not writing, she’s caring for dogs and cats as a veterinarian. You’ll never find animals at the center of her writing, though, because those fictional worlds don’t have veterinarians and her literal brain can’t accept that the poor critters would be without parasite prevention. Thornton’s debut, DAUGHTER OF THE SALT KING is available wherever books are sold.

Ah!! I really want to read My Lady Jane! I was also pretty hesitant when I got it in my owlcrate as I didn’t ever think it would be something that I would enjoy…however, I keep hearing how hilarious and fun it is!
Also every time I see Where’d You Go Bernadette, I laugh a little cause the author’s name is Maria and my sister’s name is Bernadette 😛
Ali
Hahahahaha that is funny! Very Italian names (: And MLJ was definitely surprisingly fun!

I completely agree with The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet, the whole dynamic between the crew was wonderful and had me laughing so much.
Ali
Kyzzi (I don’t know how this was spelled – I listened to the audiobook) was especially hilarious!
ArdentAttachments
Yes! She was perfect comic relief but still had such depth. I loved her.

What an interesting post! Added a bunch of these to my TBR 👀 I’m pretty sure lots of lol moments in books would make me more inclined to give them better reviews/higher ratings because of the good feels!
Ali
Right?! A book that makes me laugh always goes ups in its rating 😀

The Phantom Tollbooth was my favorite book as a kid! I adored all the cleverness and word play. I tried to reread it a few years ago and just couldn’t really get into it though and gave up after a few pages :-/ Maybe I’ll try again one day. I’ve also heard a lot of great things about Small Angry Planet and will probably give that one a read! I didn’t even realize it had humor in it 🙂
Ali
TLWTASAP isn’t supposed to be a funny book necessarily, but some of the characters are very funny in it. How weird that you weren’t able to get into The Phantom Tollbooth! I found it so engaging as an adult. But that being said, I really like children’s lit, so that may be partly why? I could see where it wouldn’t captivate an adult the same way it would a child.
Lucille
Great list!! 😀 (you might guess which is my favourite ;)) )
I’d totally recommend Terry Pratchett, it’s so fun and on-point! The Martian (but I think you already read it?) is also soooo funny! And H2G2!
Sorcerer to the Crown had a lot of scenes that really made me laugh and smile!
Ali
Hahahah I can totally guess! And YES The Martian! I should have put that one on my list, because I totally LOL’d a bunch with that one. Funny books are the best.

Wow, The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet doesn’t look funny!! That’s surprising, but I’m SUPER interested in it now.
I totally have some LOL recs– Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. I laughed on public transportation and people looked at me weird. Winger and Stand-Off by Andrew Smith both had funny moments in them.

Oooh, I’ll have to check out Me & Early.. – I’ve heard of that one before, but didn’t know much about it. I love anything that will make me laugh!
