“TBR” in the bookish world stands for “to be read,” and today I am pulling a book off of my TBR shelf to share with all of you. Caraval by Stephanie Garber is already getting a ton of hype from the advanced copies that have been released into the world. It’s slated to come out in January 2017, and if you haven’t heard of this book yet, it’s high time you did.
Here’s a synopsis of Caraval from Goodreads.
Before you enter the world of Caraval, you must remember that it’s all a game . . .
Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their ruthless father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the legendary, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.
Then, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation to Caraval finally arrives. So, Tella enlists a mysterious sailor’s help to whisk Scarlett away to this year’s show. But as soon as the trio arrives, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nonetheless soon becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with her sister, with Legend, and with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.
Alright so let’s discuss all the things this book has going for it:
- A beautiful cover. Like, a PERFECT cover. And on the advanced copies I’ve seen, the edges of the pages are stained red. Perfection.
- Magic. My favorite thing ever.
- A magical game! YES! Even better! Combining magic with some sort of game/performance thing? I’m all in. I’m getting The Night Circus vibes. Anyone else?
- A hint of a love story! Yay for a dash of romance.
- AND TONS OF GOOD REVIEWS ALREADY! Check out Chelsea’s rave review over at The Suspense is Thrilling Me, or Cait’s rave review over at A Page with a View.
Have you added Caraval to you TBR list yet? Or, are you one of the lucky ones who has an advanced copy and has already read it? What were your thoughts?
A.S. Thornton has evolved from book blogger to author with a particular fondness for writing forbidden love in ancient deserts. When not writing, she’s caring for dogs and cats as a veterinarian. You’ll never find animals at the center of her writing, though, because those fictional worlds don’t have veterinarians and her literal brain can’t accept that the poor critters would be without parasite prevention. Thornton’s debut, DAUGHTER OF THE SALT KING is available wherever books are sold.

Ohh wow,, that book sounds SO good. I have heard about it before, but never stopped to read the synopsis until just now, and I’m not sure why. It sounds GREAT!

Right?! I think it sounds awesome!

I am definitely getting The Night Circus vibes from this book, especially with it’s lovely cover. I LOVED TNC so I’m hoping it’s both not too similar but just as brilliant. It’s definitely on my list of books to get when it comes out next year! 🙂

It sounds like it’s going to be pretty different? But who knows. Either way, I’m really looking forward to it, too!

I just requested this one on NetGalley! I’ve been seeing it around a lot and was trying to cut down on my outstanding galleys before requesting, but I went ahead since it sounds like it will be really popular! It definitely has a great sounding synopsis.

Is it still available to request?? If so I might try!

I SO wANT THIS BOOK. I NEED IT LIKE I NEED AIR BASICALLY. I’m actually dyyying because of all the hype it’s getting already and it’s not in my hands and I have need for it. *shrieks* 😂 Ahem. I shall be calm. But either way it looks gorgeous and it sounds incredible and 2017 come faster!!

I have been seeing Caraval EVERYWHERE, but I never knew the plot. It sounds amazing, and it looks so beautiful, and it reminds me of The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstein in some ways – and if it’s anything like that book then it’s bound to be good!

I’ve got this on my TBR but no idea when I’ll get to it! Between the ManBooker, book club reads, and my buddy read of Ember in the Ashes with my sister (let’s not mention real life getting in the way)…I’m swamped!

Haahahah, right??? Why can’t I read a book a day?!? I’d be so much more efficient!
