If a book is going to pull me out of a reading slump it needs to be easy to read and super fast-paced (and basically I’m the expert, because I just went through one of these). Usually, books pulling me out of slumps aren’t the most mentally challenging literature. They’re just fun, escape stories. The guilty pleasures, if you will. So here are some of my top choices for books to pull me out of my reading slump. And since my tastes vary from my husband’s, he’s giving you five of his choices, too!
Ali’s Picks
1. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
Here were my thoughts after reading it. Obviously I had to put this one on the list, because this was the book I used to get me out of my most recent slump!
2. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
Honestly, it should probably be the second one in this series… See my review of the first one here.
3. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
I don’t recommend the movie. See my book review here!
4. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
I freaking loved this book! Super action-packed and easy to get into.
5. The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
Ugh, I LOVED this book. I should really re-read it, because it’s been 7-8 years since it’s been almost 10 years since I read it!
Cole’s Picks
6. Harry Potter by JK Rowling
7. The Magicians by Lev Grossman
8. A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin
9. Red Rising by Pierce Brown
This would have been one of my picks, too, if he hadn’t chosen it already. See my review here!
10. Shogun by James Clavell
Ooooh another good pick by Cole! I second that this would be a super good one to get you out of a slump (it has everything you need in a story!).
Have you read any of these? What are some of your go-to recommendations to get people out of reading slumps?
A.S. Thornton has evolved from book blogger to author with a particular fondness for writing forbidden love in ancient deserts. When not writing, she’s caring for dogs and cats as a veterinarian. You’ll never find animals at the center of her writing, though, because those fictional worlds don’t have veterinarians and her literal brain can’t accept that the poor critters would be without parasite prevention. Thornton’s debut, DAUGHTER OF THE SALT KING is available wherever books are sold.

Harry Potter is a good pick. A lot of Middle Grade would probably do, actually, since it’s easy to read and usually pretty fast-paced. The Fantastic Family Whipple, by Mark Ward, comes to mind.

I love this 🙂
It seems the best way to get out of a slump is to read something familiar!
