I didn’t read much in 2019, but I did pick up a few great books, including a couple re-reads. I was in a major book slump (ie: wasn’t interested in anything) this year, so that’s why I’m only talking about my top 5. I’ll be doing a DNF (did not finish) post a little later so you can appreciate how lame my book slump was and just how many books I picked up only to put them back down. But before we get to the sad, let’s review the good: here are my top 5 reads of 2019.
Pride and Prejudice
This was an intentional re-read. It was the exact kind of book I wanted to read: clever with a slow burn/rewarding romance. It definitely helped me through my slump a bit! This book often features in my blog posts.
Bringing Down the Duke
I never got around to reviewing this book, but my goodness I enjoyed it! It is quite funny, is easy to sit down and read, and the love story is perfect.
To be Taught, If Fortunate
Becky Chambers in an auto-buy author for me. I love the way she writes sci-fi so believably, and I adore that she can make me cry over death of artificial intelligence or fake aliens. She is phenomenal. See my review here.
The Winter Rose
I also never got around to reviewing this one. I read and loved the first one in the series, and I found I liked this one just as much! These have everything I want in a book: Lots of world-building, spanning a huge amount of time, and at the heart of it all, a love story.
The Bronze Horseman
If you haven’t heard me scream about how much I adore this book yet, you must be relatively new to my blog. This is EVERYTHING I crave in a love story, and I think I could re-read this book over and over and over again. (Although this time I cheated, I didn’t read the last 50 pages or so… I knew it was going to hook me into the whole trilogy if I did, and I wasn’t quite prepared for that much of a re-read).
What was your favorite read(s) of 2019? If you’ve done a blog post about it, link me to it down below! I’d love to pick up some new good books.
A.S. Thornton has evolved from book blogger to author with a particular fondness for writing forbidden love in ancient deserts. When not writing, she’s caring for dogs and cats as a veterinarian. You’ll never find animals at the center of her writing, though, because those fictional worlds don’t have veterinarians and her literal brain can’t accept that the poor critters would be without parasite prevention. Thornton’s debut, DAUGHTER OF THE SALT KING is available wherever books are sold.

I really need to read a Becky Chambers book. Everybody raves about them. I want to know what the hype is about.

You know, I’ve only read Persuasion by Jane Austen, which I did enjoy, so I keep meaning to read more from her – especially P&P since it’s such a classic.
